Let’s be honest—some people spend years building their careers… and some seem to destroy theirs in just one email. 😅
(P.S. If you’d rather skip the bad advice and just see how to actually get promoted, we’ve got a shortcut for you right here.)
If you really wanted to sabotage your job, there are plenty of ‘proven’ methods. To mention quite a few are listed below:
1. Always Be Late — Even to Zoom Calls 😴:
Nothing says “promotion” like showing up 15 minutes late and blaming the Wi-Fi. Every. Single. Time.2. Ignore Feedback Like a Pro 🙄 :
Why improve when you can proudly repeat the same mistakes? Consistency is key, right?3. Keep That LinkedIn Profile Outdated 💾:
Your boss loves surprises—like discovering you still list your college part-time gig as your latest job.4. Never Communicate Clearly 😵💫:
Use vague emails, skip meetings, and drop half-finished sentences in chat. Confusion is power.5. Be Allergic to Learning 🤧 :
New tools? New trends? New responsibilities? Nope. You’re too “experienced” for all that.6. Master the Art of Blame-Shifting 🤷 :
That big project failed? Definitely your teammate’s fault. Your computer’s fault. The weather’s fault. Never yours.7. Forget Professional Boundaries 🤪:
Because nothing says “career growth” like arguing with your manager over memes during a client call.

Okay, jokes aside—we both know you’re aiming for the “Career Growth” list, not the “How to Get Fired” one.
(and hey, if you were serious about getting fired, you’ve got your 7-step guide! 😉)
If you’d rather grow, learn, and future-proof your career, KudosWall’s Career Insights feature is here to help. It does more than just guessing.
The problem is, most “good” career advice is just as useless. “Be proactive!” “Network more!” “Think outside the box!” It’s vague and impossible to act on.
Here’s a mini-guide with advice you can actually use.
1. Stop “Managing Tasks.” Start “Owning Outcomes.”
- Don’t say: “I finished the report you asked for.”
- Do say: “I finished the sales report. The key insight is that our conversion rate dropped by 5% in Q3, and I believe it’s because of [Reason]. I have a few ideas for how we can fix it.”
- One person is a task-taker. The other is a future leader.
2. Replace “Responsibilities” with “Accomplishments.”
No one cares that you were “responsible for social media.” They care that you “grew the Instagram account by 3,000 followers by launching a new video series.” Update your resume and LinkedIn tonight. Use the $X-Y-Z$ formula: “Achieved [X], as measured by [Y], by doing [Z].”
3. Make Your 1-on-1s an “Agenda for You.”
Don’t wait for your manager to ask, “So… how’s it going?” Drive that meeting yourself. Send an agenda 24 hours in advance with three simple points:
- What I accomplished since we last spoke.
- What I’m blocked on and need your help with.
- What my priorities are for next week. This proves you’re organized, in control, and value their time.
4. Learn One “Adjacent” Skill.
Don’t just get better at your current job. Learn the skill of the person next to you.
- If you’re a writer, learn the basics of SEO.
- If you’re a designer, learn the basics of using a front-end framework.
- If you’re in sales, learn the basics of marketing automation. This makes you infinitely more valuable and prepared for the next step.
But advice is only half the battle. You still need the tools to track those accomplishments, find the right “adjacent skills,” and see the path forward.
