Happy Monday, KudosWall readers. I hope this dreadful day finds you all in good spirits and with strong dark roasts. There seems to be a disastrous deficiency of caffeine at my house at the moment, which has resulted in my grumbling about the place, sleepily bumping into my roommates and cursing inanimate objects. However, this coffee crisis has me feeling rather sentimental and is bringing me back to this time last year; I had just graduated from college and was looking into the gaping expanse of my future with a whole host of emotions.
Before I embark on this walk down memory lane, readers, please allow me to first congratulate you all. If you are amongst the bright, motivated, diverse group of individuals who just recently graduated college, I applaud you for making it this far. Some of you took four years to complete your degree, some more, some less. Some of you made the Dean’s list time and time again. Some of you failed classes and aced them the second time around. Many of you thought graduating college was just another part of life, and some of you were the first in your families to walk across that stage. I’ve got to say it, kudos to you!
That being said, graduation brings about the proverbial roller coaster of emotions: excitement, elation, pride, uncertainty, angst, and fear. Graduates must ask and answer questions like, “What will I do for work?” and “How will I use my degree?” (not to mention, “How on Earth will I pay for it?”) For many, this is one of the most difficult phases of life. Not to mention, many twenty-somethings have to triumph over various never-before-seen hurdles throughout the job search.
All in all, graduating college can be a little overwhelming, to say the least. Even discussing “big kid” jobs can fill young adults with a crippling lack of self-confidence. Even after acknowledging the first step (building a resume), many don’t have the skills to take it.
